How to Get Your Yard Ready for the Spring

Spring is just around the corner, and it’s time to get ready to enjoy some time outside as the weather warms up. Take a look at what you need to do to make sure your lawn greens up in no time.

Rake off Winter Debris

Snow, wind and ice storms in the winter months cause leaves, twigs and branches of trees to fall in the yard. Make sure you rake and remove the debris to make sure none of it is smothering your grass. If you have a compost pile, leaves are great to throw into the mix. Raking your yard will also help remove lawn thatch and help keep your grass growing healthy.

Aerate

Aerating your lawn helps your grass grow faster, thicker and better. You can rent a lawn aerator at a local hardware store or rental center for around $40, and make a quick job of aerating.

Overseeding

Overseeding is best done in the fall, but if you missed the boat the, you can do it now. Lay some grass seed down on any bare or sparse areas in your yard. When you overseed your lawn, also apply some compost or a slow release fertilizer. Make sure you give the grass seed plenty of water to aid germination.

Preemergent Herbicide Application

You can do this in combination with a fertilizer, most brands make two-in-one products for a one-time application. Applying a preemergent herbicide to your lawn will help prevent weeds from popping up once the weather warms up.

Mowing

Make sure you don’t cut the grass too short. This goes for each time you mow.

Don’t get behind on your spring yard chores. Get out there on a mild weather day and get started now! Happy spring, everyone!
